چکیده

A state-space approach to H2 model reduction of stable systems is pursued, using techniques from global rational optimization, and aimed at finding global optima. First, a concentrated version of the H2 criterion is derived, by optimizing analytically with respect to a subset of parameters. Next, a bound is developed, which is shown to be sharp for reduction to models of order 1. The choice of parameterization is such as to keep all these criteria rational. To illustrate the approach, a nontrivial example of a multivariable stable system of order 4 was designed, together with an approximation of order 2. Detailed analysis shows the approximation to be the global optimum among all stable system of order 2, constituting the first such system described in the literature. The fact that it also yields a global optimum to the bound, which happens to be sharp at the optimum, leads to a couple of questions for further research.

Near-optimal Frequency-weighted Interpolatory Model Reduction

This paper develops an interpolatory framework for weighted-H2 model reduction of MIMO dynamical systems. A new representation of the weighted-H2 inner products in MIMO settings is introduced and used to derive associated first-order necessary conditions satisfied by optimal weighted-H2 reduced-order models. Equivalence of these new interpolatory conditions with earlier Riccati-based conditions...

Convergence of the Iterative Rational Krylov Algorithm

The iterative rational Krylov algorithm (IRKA) of Gugercin et al. (2008) [8] is an interpolatory model reduction approach to the optimal H2 approximation problem. Even though the method has been illustrated to show rapid convergence in various examples, a proof of convergence has not been provided yet. In this note, we show that in the case of state-space-symmetric systems, IRKA is a locally co...

Optimal Placement and Sizing of Fault Current Limiter in a Real Network: a Case Study (TECHNICAL NOTE)

In this paper, the effect of number and fault current limiter(FCL) location has been investigated in order to have maximum reduction of short circuit current level in all buses in a real network. To do so, the faulty buses were identified in terms of short circuit current level by computing short circuits on the desired network. Then, while the fault current limit was modeled, its optimal locat...

Max Planck Institute Magdeburg Preprints

This paper extends an interpolatory framework for weighted-H2 model reduction to MIMO dynamical systems. A new representation of the weighted-H2 inner product in MIMO settings is presented together with associated first-order necessary conditions for an optimal weighted-H2 reduced-order model. Equivalence of these conditions with necessary conditions given by Halevi is shown. An examination of ...

A fast adaptive model reduction method based on Takenaka-Malmquist systems

An adaptive model reduction method is proposed for linear timeinvariant systems based on the continuous-time rational orthogonal basis (TakenakaMalmquist basis). The method is to find an adaptive approximation in the energy sense by selecting optimal points for the rational orthogonal basis. The stability of the reduced models holds, and the steady-state values of step responses are kept to be ...
